The Whispering Swamp is so named for the sound that the wind makes blowing through the reeds. A stretch of low marshy land, the Whispering Swamp is known for its desolate appearance and the sound of voices that is said to follow passers-by for hours after they have left the reeds behind them.
The reeds themselves, while unassuming in appearance, have sharp ridges along their edges. These sharp edges are what produces the whispering noises – although not the rumors of words carried on the wind – as well as being profoundly uncomfortable to harvest or work with. It's said that the reeds deliver such a clean cut that only the lightest sting is felt, leaving a person believing they have taken only minor injuries until they begin to feel faint with blood loss. Local residents have used this to their advantage, drying the reeds into wickedly sharp single-use knives and scalpels.
