This expanse of crystalline salt is all that now remains of an ancient seabed. Its white surface is broken, here and there, by green and purple rivulets of other minerals. After a rain, the salt sometimes dries to a mirror-like reflective surface, reflecting the clouds.
Because of the salinity of the environment, no plants grow here; the only thing visible for miles is salt. The openness of this space makes sneaking up on anyone on foot impossible. However, the birds of prey that fly overhead sometimes still manage to ambush unexpected creatures, and traveling too fast can result in dehydration.
The salt from these flats has a strange, almost sweet flavor, and is said to cure indigestion. Pregnant people often swear by it as a cure for morning sickness, so sometimes a devoted spouse will be found digging out a small quantity near the edge of the flats.
