Large cities are often the site of large meat-processing facilities. Farmers come from all around to sell their livestock, and the meat is then shipped back to local butchers who may struggle to store a full cow. The work is necessary, but can be grueling and dangerous. This particular slaughterhouse, however, has the advantage on others of its kind because it is built by a river. The carcasses are hung to drain the blood and allow the muscle fibers to relax, normally a process that requires several strong individuals to lift and lower the carcass. In this slaughterhouse, however, the hooks have been cleverly attached to a system of chains and gears powered by a waterwheel, allowing much of the process to be automated. This makes the work possible with fewer laborers - but the machinery has been responsible for several gruesome injuries.
