Borealis Bay is so-named for how often the aurora borealis graces its heavens. Lethally cold in the winter, few humans live there, except for the local fisherfolk who will drill holes through the ice to catch fish to subsist on when the nights are dark. Despite -- or perhaps because of -- the harsh nature of the region, powerful creatures often favor such places. During the colder months, wizards will sometimes set up tents on the ice to gaze, uninterrupted, at the stars, and dragons have been known to raise their young in the nearby mountains. In the spring, however, the ice thaws. The wizards have typically long since left, the dragons flown; however, any mundane journey at this time is far more hazardous.
