>[!info] Uncharted Journeys has a strong focus on travelling across vast swathes of land, by foot or mounted, through varied terrain and distinct regions. If your party needs to cross a body of water, this chapter provides some alterations to Roles and the Journey Rules to accommodate travel through seas, rivers, and beyond.
# Altered Roles
The roles and responsibilities while at sea are different to those when travelling over land. To reflect this, the Roles presented in Chapter 1 are altered to better reflect journeys over open waters. All Role Abilities and Group Travel Checks for each Role remain unchanged.

### Captain
The Captain is the heart of any crew, the driving force that keeps the ship moving through becalmed seas and howling storms. An isolated crew surrounded by miles of ocean is in need of a Captain with a grasp of morale and discipline to avoid mutiny. They are also responsible for making sure the crew works together, resolving any conflicts before they have a chance to fester. The Captain's confidence and charisma are vital to ensuring that their crew respects them, as well as providing the first impression with landlubbers and other seafolk the crew encounters along the way.
### Bosun
The Bosun is the master of the deck, the person who keeps every member of the crew coordinated to ensure a speedy voyage. They manage navigation and steering so that no matter the conditions, the ship has a clear heading. The Bosun must keep their wits about them, as it is up to them to rouse the crew to action when the ship must change course or seek a sheltered harbour at speed. They have mastered the perils of the seas, often a font of sailors' tales and nautical knowledge in steering round a maelstrom or travelling through frozen seas.
### Lookout
Up in the crows' nest or on the prow, the Lookout watches the surrounding seas and approaching land masses for any sign of danger. They must be wary of rocks and reefs, knowledgeable about the colours flown by different ships, and be able to spot a storm coming a nautical mile off. They also advise on how to throw off pursuers, find somewhere to hide along the way, or disguise the ship to make it look undesirable or intimidating. Whether they encounter sea monsters, storms, or unfriendly locals, the Lookout’s weather eye on the horizon keeps the ship safe.
### Quartermaster
Quartermasters remain an integral Role when travelling, no matter if it is over land or sea. Some ships or crews prefer to use the term First Mate, though the role remains largely the same. Quartermasters ensure the crew of any vessel are well equipped to face the hardships of stormy seas, the vastness of open oceans, and the rapids of a raging river. While they focus their attention on the crew, Quartermasters also keep an eye on the horizon for any food, equipment, or treasure that can be salvaged from the waters or land masses around them.
