*1st Tier (terrain)* **Challenge** 5 (1,800 XP); **DC** 15/14 **Area** Local (1 hour) A roaring waterfall ahead makes continuing by watercraft extremely dangerous. #### Hillside Although the river flows off a cliff face, a sloping hillside is nearby. The party can carry the vehicle downhill or lower the vessel using ropes. #### Over the Edge The party can decide to guide their vehicle (or let the water take them) over the falls, such as with Athletics or water vehicle checks. In this case the DC is +3 (treat as a Category V river). The penalties for failure are also more extreme, as described in the “Over the Edge” notes for Failures and Critical Failures. #### Ropes and Pulleys. 1 hour of planning and a successful Engineering check grants expertise on each adventurer’s check. ## Possible Solutions A group Athletics or Engineering check is needed to safely transport the vehicle downriver, which requires 4 hours of travel time. **Critical Failure.** The vehicle slips from the party’s grasp. It takes collision* damage and has a random Malfunction, and each adventurer suffers a level of fatigue and a level of strife. Over the Edge: If the party goes over the waterfall, both the vehicle and the adventurers take twice the vehicle’s usual collision damage, have a random Malfunction, and suffer a level of fatigue and a level of strife. **Failure.** The vehicle gets to the bottom, but each character suffers a level of fatigue. Over the Edge: Adventures who braved the falls suffer 2 levels of fatigue. **Success.** The adventurers safely get beyond the waterfall. **Critical Success.** As success, but it only costs the party 1 hour of travel time (excluding any time spent on planning). **Over the Edge:** No travel time taken at all! ___ **Source:** Rollin' on a River (GPG 39)
