A rare celestial event has taken place, the passing of the three-tailed comet Baez’Keph set into motion a thousand years ago. It has both literally and figuratively shone new light on gaining access to Baez’Keph’s tomb as well as many others, as beacons all over the region have begun emitting beams of light into the stars above after the comet passed. These beacons map out some great cypher for the gods and supposedly re-awaken long rested ones, but they also grant passage to places previously impossible to reach, such as Baez’Keph’s tomb.
The beacons only shine for three days after the comet passes, after which they sputter out, resealing the tombs and squelching secrets for another millennium. Along with the lights, the comet has also brought panic and superstition among fringe groups within the city as sandstorms assault the region and an impending eclipse promises to blot out the sun. Some believe the eclipse will last ages and leave Midgard in a perpetual darkness. The exact 72-hour mark at which the beacons will go dark lines up precisely with the full penumbra of the eclipse.
The comet also has cultural and divine significance. Many locals celebrate its coming as a sign of good fortune and prophecy of their gods, as many other gods also lay claim to be the origin of the comet’s presence. Regardless of the knowledge (or lack thereof) of the comet’s true origin, most of the locals in Sjan’ab are abuzz with discussing it, for better or worse. Along with the revelry, this astrological phenomenon comes with much talk of uncertainty. Fearful ideas of doom are spoken in hushed tones in the corners of public places, and proclamations of disaster echo along the streets as doomsayers, cultists, and grifters of all manner seek purpose and profit amid the tension. Among those filling the city are the cultists of Tiberesh. They know what the comet heralds, and they are waiting for the right moment to raid the tomb of Baez’Keph and wrestle the staff from her frozen grasp.
In truth, the eclipse will come and go as normal if the cultists of Tiberesh don’t obtain the trident. However, they are seeking this opportunity to retrieve the staff in hopes of using it to hold the eclipse in place and aid their lord’s return to power. He already stirs within the sands somewhere in the Southlands, and with this artifact, they could expedite his return to power.
