## Journey or Exploration?
Our campaign will define the "Exploration Pillar" as any challenge outside of Combat or a Social encounter. Kind of a catch-all category for everything else.
The Exploration Pillar includes something you encounter during cross-country travel, other activities you might do in a dungeon besides fight or rest, or non-social encounters in a city or town. Some examples include getting pick-pocketed in a city, earthquakes, extreme weather, an obstacle of some kind, detecting hidden doors or traps, puzzles/riddles/ciphers, etc.
___
A **Journey** is a subset of encounters or activities within the Exploration pillar. It specifically covers cross-country travel, and non-social encounters in a settlement.
## Journey Checklist
The following simple process will cover any cross-country travel. Short trips of less than a handful of miles will usually not get into this.
1. **DM (usually done in advance):** Based on the world map, the Narrator determines which *regions* exist on the route. Region boundaries could be forest vs grassland, territorial borders which create significant differences, or any other notable difference between this area and that.
2. For each region, determine the travel distance, travel pace, and resultant travel time.
1. **DM:** The Narrator determines the region's traits and **task DC** (usually done in advance), and rolls 1d20 to determine the prevailing weather (done in the moment).
2. **Party:** Determine transportation and [[Travel Pace 1]] .
3. **Each adventurer:** selects one or more [[Journey Activities]] and makes relevant checks. ***Note:** Multi-tasking, such as attempting a journey activity while trying not to be discovered, adds +3 to the DC of checks for success.*
4. **DM:** rolls for one or more encounters using the appropriate tiered table for that [Region](https://a5e.tools/rules/regions "Click to view a local node.") . These may be [monsters](https://a5e.tools/monsters), [exploration challenges](https://a5e.tools/rules/exploration-challenges), [social encounters](https://a5e.tools/rules/social-encounters), or [scenery](https://a5e.tools/rules/travel-scenery).
5. Determine [Supply](https://a5e.tools/rules/supply "Click to view a local node.") usage and apply [fatigue](https://a5e.tools/rules/conditions) if necessary.
3. Repeat step 2 for each region.
4. Arrive at your destination!
#### Sequence
Normally we will resolve journey activities, and then run any encounters.
