The adventurer focuses their attention to finding secret doors, including disguised trapdoors and hidden stairwells. This takes an [[03-Mechanics/6-Ability Scores/Investigation|Investigation]] (to notice telling details close up) or [[03-Mechanics/6-Ability Scores/Perception|Perception]] check (to notice more visible clues, like scrapes in the stone, an already-turned candlestick, etc).
- **Critical Failure.** The adventurer’s misplaced focus distracts them from danger. While the adventurer is performing this activity they do not add their [[03-Mechanics/6-Ability Scores/Proficiency Bonus|Proficiency Bonus]] or ability modifier to initiative rolls.
- **Failure.** The adventurer overlooks the obvious, suffering a –2 penalty to [[03-Mechanics/6-Ability Scores/Perception|Perception]] and [[03-Mechanics/6-Ability Scores/Investigation|Investigation]] checks.
- **Success.** The adventurer’s *passive Perception* score increases by 5 for the purposes of locating secret doors, but they suffer a –2 penalty to spot creatures, treasure, and traps.
- **Critical Success.** Your *passive Perception* increases by 2, and your *passive Investigation and Perception* scores increase by 5 for the purposes of locating secret doors.
