The covert skills of the rogue and the all-around smarts of the scholar are a good fit for each other. This is a Dexterity/Intelligence pairing, and both component classes benefit, directly or indirectly, from both ability scores being high. Because neither class has spellcasting by default and neither gets Extra Attack by default either, this is a very good pairing from a synergy perspective. It’s almost as good in terms of class vibes as well. Certainly there’s plenty of precedent in fiction, legend, pop culture, and reality for very smart people with covert or criminal skills. Master spies, master thieves, military planners and more can all fall under the umbrella of this pairing with no adjustment or reskinning required. This is one of those combinations that will play pretty similarly regardless of the level mix. The real question is whether you want more sneak attack damage (in which case, go with rogue) or you want more knowledge and smarts at your disposal (in which case you’ll want to emphasize scholar more).
