Though at first glance one might assume this works about the same as the ranger/witch pairing, there are some important differences. First, the wizard class is lock to Intelligence as its spellcasting ability score, which means that a character with this combination of classes will have some more decisions to make about which ability scores to emphasize. That is made up for, however, by the presence of some premier combat spells like shield that are available to wizards but not witches.
A stronger focus on ranger gives you the standard ranger “stealthy combat and exploration expert” experience with a selection of helpful spells. A stronger focus on wizard levels means a spellcaster with an independent streak who can live comfortably outside of settled areas, perhaps as a way to conduct their magical research with a minimum of interruptions. A roughly equal mix gives you a magical skirmisher who combines their survival abilities and supernatural knowledge.
