On the face of it, this is a truly ill-advised combination; the herald class is primarily focused on Strength and Charisma and the wizard class is mostly focused on Intelligence. In addition, heralds are a front-line combat class with powerful melee damage features, high hit points, healing capabilities, and typically a high armor class. They operate on durability and in melee combat. Wizards have extremely low hit points and minimal class features other than their spellcasting. They tend to work at a distance and stay out of the fray.
The flavor of both classes is also quite different, with the herald being oriented around physical training and conviction and the wizard being dedicated to the most cerebral of academics. That means that a multiclass build featuring levels of both will have some difficult choices to make, because in most cases, the character will not be able to do everything.
A focus on herald levels makes for an idealistic and dedicated warrior with a streak of scholarship who can use a few key wizard spells such as shield, find familiar, magic missile, and comprehend languages.
A focus on wizard levels with a few levels of herald will give you a dedicated spellcaster with a harder outer shell; they can wear armor, heal their wounds and those of others, and use better weapons than most other wizards can, albeit with a slightly lower amount of raw magical power.
If emphasizing wizard levels, it’s probably most beneficial to stick with even-numbered levels of herald levels (2, 4, and 6 are all good choices) to minimize the impact on the wizard’s spell slots. If going in the other direction, odd number of wizard levels will give access to key tiers of wizard spells. An even or near-even number of levels makes an extremely well-rounded character, but their focus is spread thin. This may indicate membership in a specialized order or organization dedicated to a specific purpose.
