This is probably one of the most straightforward ways to play a fighting spellcaster. Mechanically, this combination has the same problems that creating any kind of fighting spellcaster has: the build wants physical ability scores to be high for weapon use and at least one mental one to be high for spellcasting. More levels in the martial class dilutes the spellcasting of the warlock. All of that said, this combination works better, or at least more easily, than many. The fighter class mixes well with just about anything and the warlock class’s high degree of customizability helps mitigate the dilution of the spellcasting by allowing you to pick up invocations that help your preferred concept and tactics. Flavor-wise, it’s hard to pin down; the fighter and warlock classes are both largely “blank slate” in terms of flavor and will be heavily defined by their respective archetypes. There can be harmony or dissonance basically at the player’s whim based on those choices. More fighter levels will give you a warrior with some magical tools to pull out as needed, more warlock levels or an even mix (particularly with Pact of the Blade) will give you a warrior-spellcaster hybrid who can engage with both weapons and magic. Regardless of build, one thing that is good to keep in mind, however, is that both fighter and warlock are “short rest” classes with a number of resources (notably both spell points and exertion) that come back on a short rest as opposed to a long one. This means that as long as the party is willing to take a breather on a fairly regular basis, they can remain relatively “fresh” for long stretches of time.
