This is about as mechanically compatible as combining wielder with any slot-based primary spellcasting class. Depending on archetype choice for the wielder you may have overlap between your wielder spellcasting ability score and your bard one or they may be different. One thing that does help a bit more with the bard class than several others, however, is the focus on general versatility and flexibility. Bards are more than just spellcasters, and that combines better with the martial aspects of the wielder.
Flavor-wise, this is neither an obvious pairing nor a clear contrast. Bards certainly do not have anything in their class that conflicts with using a powerful magic item, and there’s nothing in the wielder class that suggests a recalcitrance towards the artistic or social aspects of the bard class. But perhaps except in the case of a magical musical instrument, there’s also not much to make this an obvious pairing, either.
More levels of bard will give you a powerful spellcaster with a lot of personal versatility and a bit more martial skill than a typical single-classed bard. More levels of wielder give you an artifact-oriented battle mage with some additional social skills and magical flexibility. An even mix creates a support-oriented fighting spellcaster with a wide range of secondary capabilities.
