The mechanics on these two classes weren’t exactly made for one another— rangers like Dexterity (or sometimes Strength) and a bit of Wisdom while artificers are focused on Intelligence. The mechanics of both classes also operate pretty independently of one another as well; neither will get in the other’s way, but this is definitely a “versatility” pairing more than a “depth” one. That said, you can definitely get a substantial amount of versatility here; between the capabilities of the two component classes, this definitely has the potential to be an “always able to contribute” character, at least in the combat and exploration pillars.
Flavor-wise, artificers are more urban and rangers more rural in their focus, but there’s a lot of potential for complementary flavor as well. The archetypes for both cover quite a bit of territory.
More levels of artificer gives you a magical gadgeteer that won’t freak out when left out in the wilderness. More levels of ranger gives you a scout with a few gadgets at their disposal. Mixing them in roughly equal measure can do a number of things, but probably the big one is a well-equipped “monster slayer.”
