Mechanically, this is a decent pick for synergy. The artificer and fighter classes don’t particularly “get in each other’s way” and you can probably get away with emphasizing just one physical ability score (either Strength or Dexterity) and Intelligence, which is fairly manageable, even with synergy feats slowing ability point gain. Flavor-wise, this also works fine. Fighters are the ultimate in terms of flavor versatility, with the lion’s share of a fighter character’s flavor coming from their origins and archetype rather than the class itself. There’s also nothing in either the base class or most of the archetypes that conflicts with the artificer’s flavor, which is definitely stronger on the class level. More levels in artificer gives you a magic items specialist that can hold their own in a fight. More levels in fighter gives you a warrior that isn’t afraid to rely on their equipment. A roughly even mix of the two gives you a true combat gadget master, able to pull out magical surprises or just beat their opposition down through raw force of arms as the situation merits.
